Women's participation in sport to be celebrated in awards ceremony

For the fifth year, the Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, in collaboration with the Eastern Cape Sport Confederation, will host the Eastern Cape Achievers Awards, which will take place on Friday evening at the Boardwalk Casino, in Port Elizabeth.

A few changes were made in this year's Awards - normally there are 85 categories, this year, there are only 25.

The MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC), Bulelwa Tunyiswa, on Thursday said that the Department received a record number of 175 nominations. Out of the 25 categories, the Sportswoman of the Year category is leading with 20 nominations.

"We are more than ready to host this year’ Sport and Recreation Achievers Awards, more so in this Centenary year of Tata Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and Mama Albertina Nontsikekelo Sisulu," she said.

"Theirs has been a life well lived, a life dedicated to the service of their fellow country men and women. A life dedicated to the emancipation of the people of this country. We are therefore compelled in this year of 2018, to be the legacy."

She added that this year's awards will be under the year's theme 'Be the Legacy' and the Department is more than ready to host the event.

According to MEC Tunyiswa, the awards are hosted to honor individuals, federations and teams, who have excelled both on and off the field for the period 1st June 2017 to 30 June 2018 as well as celebrating the participation of women in sport.

She emphasized the need for women's recognition as well as participation in boxing rings cricket, rugby, soccer and netball field etc.

For this year’ awards we have 25 categories, which are:

3. Recreation Body / Organisation Awards

4. Photographer of the Year

5. Presenter of the Year

6. Journalist of the Year

7. Indigenous Games Star of the Year

8. Indigenous Games Team of the Year

 9. Volunteer of the Year

10. School Team of the Year

11. Developing School Team of the Year

12. Technical Official of the Year

13. Sport Administrator of the Year

 14. Coach of the Year

15. Sport Team of the Year for Persons with a Disability

16. Sport Team of the Year

17. Federation of the Year

18. New Comer of the Year

19. Sportswoman of the Year – Golden Age

20. Sportsman of the Year – Golden Age

21. Sportswoman of the Year for Persons with a Disability

22. Sportsman of the Year for Persons with a Disability

23. Sportswoman of the Year

24. Sportsman of the Year

25. Sport Star of the Year
