World Environmental Day Celebrated

On World Environmental Day, 5 June 2018, George Environmental department started a campaign to evaluate the cleanliness of areas in George which are most affected by illegal dumping.

Grace Notshokovu from the Environmental department, who oversees the campaign said the focus will be on litter in the main streets. She said the public is not involved in the campaign process as they want the competition between wards to be fair.

Notshokovu said that litter present in the streets, overgrown gardens and the beautification of gardens are some of the criteria being looked at.

"The purpose of the campaign is to encourage our communities to keep their areas clean and healthy at all times although we have Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers cleaning the streets," Notshokovu said. She said we also need to change the mindset of thinking that people are creating jobs by littering.

The department is planning a ceremony that will take place for the winning area. The winning area will be awarded a certificate and a trophy for the cleanest Main Street.

The evaluation will take place in the Wards mostly affected by illegal dumping; Thembalethu, Pacaltsdorp, Parkdene, Lawaaikamp, Conville, Rosemoor, Protea Park, Blanco, Borchards and Touwsranten. The winner of the area will be announced in July 2018.
