A newborn baby girl was found this weekend in a plastic bag on a sports field of a settlement in Mpumalanga. The little one still had her umbilical cord.

Brig. Selvy Mohlala, police spokesperson, says that children were playing in the vicinity of the sports field in Mbuzini on Sunday around 15:00 when they came across the bundle. The children went to call adults and they were able to determine that the little girl was still alive.

The adults performed first aid on the baby and carefully cut her umbilical cord before taking her to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Mohlala says the baby is currently in the care of medical staff and she is doing well under the circumstances.

A case has since been opened and the police are now appealing to the public to pass on any information regarding the baby’s mother to detectives. Sipho Shekwa on 072 119 3487 or the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111.

Lt. Gen. Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, provincial police commissioner, condemned the “inhuman act”.

“This month we are supposed to be proud of the best practices by our women,” Manamela said on Monday, referring to Women’s Month.
