Bafana geared up to hang up signs against Nigeria

When history counts against you, it offers you a golden opportunity to rewrite the history books.

Bafana Bafana play tonight at the Stade de la Paix in the semi-final of the Africa Cup against Nigeria; a team against whom they had never before tasted success in the tournament.

South Africa does not simply – or if ever – win against Nigeria in this competition and tonight’s duel offers a golden opportunity to hang up the signs.

And where the West African team can count on individual stars to provide a touch of magic on the field, Bafana Bafana rather believe that quite a few swallows make the summer.

“For example, look at Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen who plays for Napoli – he is a big star. We don’t necessarily have such a player, but all the players together make us a good team,” said Hugo Broos.

Osimhen, meanwhile, is also ready for action after Nigeria sweated over his fitness earlier.

However, Broos does not blind himself to the Napoli hero’s star status; he believes that his players are familiar with each other’s game.

“Everyone does what is expected of them and sometimes that is more important than bragging about a few big names.”

There are a number of Mamelodi Sundowns players in the Bafana squad and they almost instinctively know what the others are going to do.

“Our defense consists of four Sundowns players and they understand each other very well. It’s not the same when you have four players from different clubs, because then you have to work on their understanding.”

Bafana Bafana definitely wear the outside horse tag tonight.

Yet at the same time it means that they have nothing to lose and that they can play with a touch more freedom against Africa’s football giants.

“Very few people thought that we would progress this far and there is now much less pressure on us. However, this does not mean at all that we do not want to play in the final.”

The showdown starts tonight at 19:00.
