Filmmaker and actress Greta Gerwig, the woman whose name is still on everyone’s lips thanks to the success of her 2023 hit movie Barbieis just as the American magazine Time named woman of the year.

This list is drawn up annually to recognize exceptional women leaders who “work to create a more just and equal world”.

Gerwig (40) appears on the cover of this magazine’s women of the year edition.

Women such as the young American tennis player Coco Gauff, Leena Nair, the international CEO of Chanel, as well as Yael Admi, the co-founder and leader of the Israeli movement Women Wage Peace, are also part of this list.

“Besides being emotional, thoughtful and flashy, she is the only director in history whose first three solo projects have been nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars,” Time ‘s editor, Sam Lansky, said of Gerwig.

He further added that her films are also doing well at the box office, with her semi-autobiographical solo directorial debut, Lady Birdwhich $79 million (R1.5 billion) and Little Women which earned more than $200 million (R3.7 billion).

Barbie in turn earned more than $1.4 billion (R26 billion) worldwide and received a string of Oscar nominations.

Although Gerwig himself was not nominated as director for it, something that Barbie-made fans see red, she continued Time said that she was “just glad that we all of the Barbieteam together at the Oscars”.

The magazine further reports that this three-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker is currently working on a new Netflix adaptation of the first book in CS Lewis’s Chronicles of Narniaseries – something she says is close to her heart.

Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s CEO, refers in the Time-reports on Gerwig as an “incredible visionary person” and describes the world she creates for this new movie as “anchored in faith, much like Lewis’ original material”.

It is not yet known when this adaptation will be shown on Netflix.
