Bats do the talking in SA20

Henry

It’s about to rain for your boundary shots in the first few matches of the SA20 tournament. It is almost strange to think that barely a week or two ago the Protea Test team was bowled out for a mere 55 runs.

Admittedly, it was on a difficult Newlands course surface.

But Ryan Rickelton and Heinrich Klaasen – currently the two leading run-scorers in the latest version of the SA20 tournament – have already hit 25 sixes between them.

Rickelton hits his runs at a strike rate of 185, while Klaasen puts in the long stem as usual: He bats at a blistering strike rate of 197.56.

Then MI Cape Town’s Rassie van der Dussen scored the first century of the 2024 tournament when he hit a blistering 104 runs from just 50 balls.

The 34-year-old batsman said in a recent interview that he is keeping his fingers crossed that his good performances in the SA20 will book his plane ticket to the USA for the T20 World Cup.

South Africa will play Sri Lanka on June 3 in its opening match of the international spectacle in New York.

In the first seven SA20 matches, the teams have already scored 200 or more runs five times with the Cape Town’s spectacular innings of 243/5 against the Joburg Super Kings the highest score yet.

Yet the batsmen don’t just close their eyes and swing. Klaasen had to know his story on Monday to receive the player of the match award in Durban.

His innings of 64 runs played a decisive role in the Super Giants’ eventual triumph against the Super Kings; especially when one takes into account that the Durbanites at one stage were staggering with their score at 34/4.
