Blitzboks fifth in Perth

The Blitzbokke ended their Perth sevens campaign on a winning note when they beat France 24-5 at the HBF Stadium.

The result means that the South Africans finish the tournament in fifth place.

Shilton van Wyk and the promising Tristan Leyds’ tries ensured a comfortable half-time lead against the French, while Selvyn Davids and Donovan Don also contributed to the try-scoring party in the second half.

South Africa enjoyed a good run-up to the tournament with wins against Canada and Spain, but they lost to Argentina and Fiji.

The Blitzbokke did indeed put on a brave performance in the cup quarter-final against Fiji, but a few mistakes ultimately cost them.

The South Africans also had to do without the services of Quewin Nortjé in the final match after the speedster hurt his leg against the islanders.

“Quewin is someone who never complains or misses an exercise. He plays six games in a row without any complaints. His injury definitely leaves a big void in the team,” said coach Sandile Ngcobo.
