Blitzboks must ‘fiesta’ and not ‘siesta’ on the Madrid sevens field

The final tournament of the HSBC sevens series will be decided in Madrid next week and the Blitzboks will be anything but looking to deliver a sleepy performance in the Spanish capital.

After a disappointing series – where they struggled especially in Vancouver and Los Angeles – they will be persuaded to deliver a better performance.

It won’t be easy: South Africa plays against Ireland, New Zealand and Fiji.

However, Philip Snyman has an experienced group of players at his disposal with stars such as Impi Visser, Selvyn Davids and Shakes Soyizwapi in his ranks, while Ryan Oosthuizen will be playing in his 50th tournament.

“Yes, this is the final tournament and it will definitely be a challenge to compete against Ireland and co., but we showed in Hong Kong and Singapore that we can finish the group phase undefeated,” said Snyman.

According to the temporary Blitzbok head coach, the players have turned over a new leaf.

“We have a chance to win the final tournament and to later qualify for the Olympic Games. There is so much at stake and our season is not over yet.”

The Olympic qualifying tournament will be decided from June 21-23 in Monaco.
