Blitzboks will have to pull up their socks today

The Blitzbokke will have to throw everything into the battle today to stay in the Madrid Cup race after the team lost its opening match of the final tournament in the Spanish capital.

Ireland beat the South Africans 26 – 21 after scoring the winning run in injury time.

The Blitzbokke enjoyed a lead of 21 – 7 early in the second half, but Zac Ward and Gavin Mullin’s tries sealed the matchup for the Irish.

Philip Snyman’s team is still playing against New Zealand and Fiji today.

The interim head coach said in the run-up to the tournament that the Blitzboks will have to dish out more relentless play.

“It helps a lot that you have the ability to beat any team, only to lose in the playoffs,” Snyman said.

He added that a good performance in Madrid will lay the foundation for their Olympic Games qualification dreams in Monaco.

However, the team will not be able to afford to take its foot off the accelerator again against New Zealand and Fiji.

Today’s terms:

12:44: South Africa v New Zealand

15:49: South Africa v Fiji.
