At least there is international rugby again in Bloemfontein.

SA Rugby (Saru) confirmed today that the Springboks will play host to Portugal at the Toyota Stadium in the Rose City on 20 July.

“We are very excited to return to Bloemfontein for this historic match and we are determined to make our passionate supporters proud,” said Rassie Erasmus.

The Boks have never faced Portugal, but the European team surprised friend and foe with their adventurous game during the last World Cup tournament.

Among other things, they played to a draw against Georgia (18 each), while they settled with Fiji (24 – 23) in an action-packed showdown.

“The venue has now been confirmed and we can start full steam ahead with our planning work. The Portugal match provides additional excitement for the new year, especially after we finished 2023 with a successful World Cup campaign,” said Saru’s director of rugby.

South Africa lost 13-12 against Wales in its previous test in Bloemfontein. It was the first ever home defeat against the Red Dragons.
