Boy (12) allegedly rapes toddler

The police in Limpopo’s domestic violence, child protection and sexual offenses unit launched an investigation after a young boy (12) allegedly raped a three-year-old girl in Thohoyandou this week.

The alleged incident took place on Tuesday afternoon in the Tshififi settlement.

Brig. Police spokesperson Hlulani Mashaba says preliminary information indicates that the victim went to play with other children at the suspect’s house. The toddler later returned to her own home where her mother suspected trouble.

The child’s mother then took her to the local clinic where medical staff finally confirmed that she had been raped.

The police were contacted and a case of rape was registered.

The help of a probation officer has also since been called in as the suspect is a minor.

Lt. Gen. Thembi Hadebe, police commissioner in Limpopo, expressed her shock at the incident on Thursday.

“There is an increase in the sexualization of children and they become victims of abuse committed by adults and children themselves. Parents should pay more attention to the children they raise and always be protective of their future and what they are exposed to.”

The police investigation continues.
