Buhai steps on clay in Scottish Open

South Africa’s Ashleigh Buhai struggled to control the conditions in the women’s Scottish Open on the Dundonald Links course in Irvine on Friday afternoon and failed to qualify for the final two rounds.

Buhai, who scored 76 shots in the first round, followed it up with 74 shots in the second round. She finished at 150 hits and ended up under the ax.

Buhai will defend her British Open title at the Walton Health Country Club in Surrey from next week and is using the Scottish Open as her final preparation.

Japan’s Hinako Shibuno is two strokes ahead of Sweden’s Maja Stark at 132 (-12), followed by Australia’s Sarah Kemp and France’s Celine Boutier, who both finished at 137 (-7).

Of the other South Africans, Paula Reto (144, equal figure), Casandra Alexander and Lee-Anne Pace (both 146, +2) qualified for the last two rounds.

* In the American PGA Series’ Wyndham Championship played at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, American Russell Henley (128, -12) leads countryman Billy Horschel (129, -11) by one stroke after the second round round of this tournament.

The Americans Brendon Todd and Lucas Glover, Byeong-Hun An from Korea and the Canadian Adam Svensson are together third at 130 (-10), with Ludvig Aaberg (Sweden) seventh at 132 (-8), with Stephan Jaeger (Germany) and the Americans Brandon Wu, Troy Merritt and JT Poston together eighth at 133 (-7).

South Africa’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout (137, -3) is 40th, but Garrick Higgo, Dylan Frittelli and MJ Daffie could not make the cut.

* In the LIV series’ Greenbrier tournament, South Africa’s Dean Burmester (-6), Louis Oosthuizen (-5) and Branden Grace (-4) stand firm after the first round of the tournament.

The South African Stinger team is at -15 with Torque and the Range Goats (all -15) in second position behind Smash, who finished at -19.

Matthew Wolff leads after the first round at -9, followed by David Puig and Harold Varner III, who both finished at -7.

Charl Schwartzel finished at -4 in the clubhouse.
