Autopax, a subsidiary of Prasa that operates the City to City and Translux bus services, says it is one of its buses that was involved in a horrific collision on the N6 in the Free State in the early hours of Friday morning.

Neil Roesch, CEO of Autopax, says the bus was on its way from Johannesburg in Gauteng to Idutywa in the Eastern Cape when it collided with a truck between Rouxville and Smithfield in the Free State.

A preliminary report indicates that the truck moved into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with the bus.

A total of seven people – the respective drivers of the truck and bus, as well as five passengers – died during the accident. Roesch says 43 passengers are still being treated in hospital at this stage.

RNews earlier reported that the accident occurred approximately 27 km outside Smithfield in the direction of Bloemfontein. The emergency services were called to the scene at around 04:00.

“We are deeply saddened by the multiple loss of life due to this terrible accident. We hope that those who sustained injuries will recover quickly. We also express our condolences to the families who lost their loved ones,” said Roesch.
