Two suspects appeared in the magistrate’s court in Vereeniging on Thursday in connection with the murder of businessman Riaan van Lingen.

Sxumisa Dlamini (32), an illegal immigrant from Swaziland, and Sizwe Nkosi (30) are facing charges of murder, kidnapping and robbery. Nkosi can also be charged with possession of an illegal firearm.

Van Lingen’s (61) body was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the Vaalrand area in Gauteng on Tuesday. He was reported missing on Monday, after he did not return from a meeting at 17:00.

The police immediately launched a search for the suspects. According to the police in Gauteng, an amount of R500 000 was transferred from his account to an unknown account on the same day as the businessman’s disappearance. Later the same day, an additional R200 000 and R250 000 were transferred to a car dealer.

That evening, Van Lingen’s card was used to buy liquor worth R2 000 at a tavern in Thembisa. It is this transaction that put the police on the trail of the two and they were arrested on Tuesday, shortly after Van Lingen’s body was found.

The suspects’ case was adjourned until February 20 to enable them to obtain legal representation. Lumka Mahanjana, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), says the state intends to oppose bail.
