Cape Town International Airport walked away with the award for best airport in Africa for the ninth consecutive year at the leading Skytrax World Airport Awards on Thursday evening.
The airport also received the award for best airport staff in Africa for the fourth consecutive time.
The prestigious Skytrax World Airport Awards annually honor airports worldwide for the quality of their service delivery.
Alan Winde, Premier of the Western Cape, says he is proud of the airport’s team.
“Awards like these are the result of hard work and dedication by everyone at the airport. Congratulations! Tourism is a key player in job and opportunity creation, and this world-class airport is the entry point for local and foreign visitors to our province,” says Winde.
Mireille Wenger, Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities, also congratulated the staff of the Airports Company of South Africa (Acsa) and the airport on the award.
“Your hard work and dedication is clear, and this tremendous achievement is a beautiful proof of our province’s lively and dynamic spirit.”
According to Wenger, there are big plans to double Cape Town’s tourism figures by 2035.
“These honors are like fuel for our tourism and economic engines.”
The King Shaka International Airport in Durban was named the best regional airport in Africa, while the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg was named the third best airport in Africa and also collected the award for best airport hotel.
Haneda Airport in Tokyo, Japan was named the world’s cleanest airport, while Doha’s airport was named the best airport for shopping, as well as the best airport in the Middle East.
Singapore’s Changi Airport has been voted the best airport in Asia, as well as the world’s best airport for immigration services. Seoul’s Incheon Airport in South Korea has been named the world’s most family-friendly airport.
