Category 1- state funeral for Buthelezi

A Category 1 state funeral will be held on Friday for the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

Buthelezi, former leader of the IVP and traditional prime minister of the Zulu nation, died in the early hours of Saturday morning. He was 95 years old.

Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Tuesday that Buthelezi will be honored with the highest category of state funeral when he is laid to rest in Ulundi in KwaZulu-Natal.

The president can announce a state funeral for people to whom the country wishes to pay the highest honor. For example, a special category 1 state funeral was also held in 2021 for Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.

According to the presidency, Buthelezi’s funeral will contain elements of military honors. It was also ordered that flags be flown at half-mast nationwide until the evening after Buthelezi’s funeral.

While preparations for the funeral continue, Ramaphosa once again expressed his condolences to the royal household, as well as Buthelezi’s friends and national and international colleagues.

Buthelezi was the founder and former leader of the IVP. From 1994 to 2004, he served as the minister of the interior in the cabinets of former pres. Served Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki.

He died two weeks after his 95th birthday. His last birthday was celebrated in hospital after he suffered complications from a back operation.
