DCD back at this year’s Comrades

After months of grueling but successful preparation for the Comrades marathon, the Department of Correctional Services (DKD) will compete for the 49th race on Sunday.

More than 270 officers will tackle the 85.91 km route. The first group already jumps off at 05:30 at the Durban City Hall with the finish at the Scottsville racecourse in Pietermaritzburg.

The officials are no rookies at the 97th version of this popular ultramarathon. DCD athletes are regularly involved in some sort of sporting event.

Mbusiseni Yaka and Ziphindile Dlamini are back at the marathon again this year and will want to improve on their times of 6:55 and 8:41 respectively. The veterans, Vitalis Poli (59) and Mabatalale Ntshehi (60), are also keen to expand their Comrades medal collection.

The department’s official water point is at the 74 km mark where other volunteers will be seen throughout the route to provide the necessary help and assistance.

The DKD choir performs again at the Comrades marathon expo – this is the second consecutive year that the choir will make its appearance at the marathon.

Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale, national commissioner, says the participation emphasizes their commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle.

“For us it is also about our commitment to the community and national pride.”
