Eight robbers were arrested on Friday shortly after a diplomat was robbed at the corner of Burnett and Festival Streets in Hatfield, Pretoria. The incident took place around 2:00 p.m.

The police suspect that the suspects may be part of a syndicate that is responsible for a wave of armed robberies. The modus operandi of this syndicate is, among other things, to use signal jammers and then rob motorists of their belongings.

According to Brig. Athlenda Mathe, police spokesperson, said the armed men blocked the diplomat’s vehicle with two vehicles, a white Toyota Corolla and a white Ford Ranger.

They then robbed her of her handbag and other belongings and left her to pieces.

However, the police reacted quickly and chased the suspects. Four suspects were chased on the N1 and another four to the Ultra City Shell filling station in Midrand, according to Mathe.

All eight were arrested. The police confiscated one firearm, as well as three mobile phones and three signal jamming devices.

Mathe says the suspects are currently in custody, and that investigations are already underway to determine whether they can also be connected to other incidents of armed robbery or signal disturbance incidents.
