A suspect who is considered one of the most notorious and dangerous hitmen in the Western Cape was shot dead on Sunday evening during a shootout with police officers in Lwandle at the Strand.

Lt. Col. Malcolm Pojie, police spokesperson, says that the suspect in question is connected to at least ten cases in which 12 victims were murdered between February 2022 and March this year in Lwandle.

Police officers attached to, among others, the Western Cape police’s serious and violent crime unit responded on Sunday evening to information which indicated that the suspect was at a premises in Lwandle.

The police officers raided this premises around 23:00 and the suspect fired shots in the direction of the police officers in an attempt to evade arrest.

The police officers returned fire and the suspect was fatally wounded. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two of the deceased’s alleged accomplices were also arrested during the raid at the premises in question in Lwandle. These suspects are also connected to some of the cases in which the deceased acted as the alleged mastermind. These include a triple murder, a double murder, four murders, two attempted murders, one of which was committed against a police member, a robbery at a guest house and possession of stolen goods.

Pojie says the two suspects, respectively 32 and 36 years old, will appear in court as soon as they have been formally charged. The possibility exists that charges may be brought against the suspects later.

“The management of the Western Cape police commended the police members for their endurance and dedication to ridding our communities of criminals who instilled so much fear and terrorized the community for years.”
