Dricus goes on title tour

Dricus du Plessis, South Africa’s UFC champion, will visit Cape Town and Pretoria on his title tour.

The 30-year-old sports star is at the V&A waterfront in the Mother City on Friday, while on Saturday he will make a trip to the Jakaranda City at Menlyn Maine.

According to CIT Performance Institute – the martial arts mecca where Du Plessis hones his skills – the tour is being launched to thank the supporters.

“Without you, it would not have been possible to reach the milestone. This is not just to celebrate with the champion; it is also a pat on the back for everyone who walked the road with us,” CIT said on social media.

A week or two ago, Du Plessis created a frenzy in the UFC cage when he overpowered the USA’s Sean Strickland in the middleweight title fight in Toronto.

Back on home soil, he enjoyed a hero’s welcome at the OR Tambo airport.

“It feels amazing. I know that people are busy working, while there are also so many things going on in their lives; yet everyone made time to support a countryman who pursued his dream. I was simply emotional when I saw it,” said Du Plessis at the airport.

He added that his title success does not mean the end of his ambition path.

“Other fighters have been champions in two weight divisions. Now, if they can do that, it means that I can do something similar. I can reach even higher heights and this is only the beginning.”
