The police seized yet another massive shipment of drugs – this time at a seaport in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). Cocaine with a street value of approximately R65 million, which was apparently transported on a vessel from Brazil, was seized.
According to Brig. Athlenda Mathe members of the Gqeberha seaport followed up information on Thursday and intercepted the vessel, after which 35 blocks of cocaine were found.
“No one has been arrested so far and the police are investigating a case of drug trafficking,” she says.
Mathe labels this as the police’s third massive drug raid in a period of three weeks.
“The other two drug incidents were in KwaZulu-Natal where the police seized cocaine worth R150 million.”
General Fannie Masemola, the national commissioner of police, praised the team for the latest raid, as well as the police from all over the country for the fight against all forms of crime.
“Intelligence is at work, our members are ready to strike throughout the country and arrest all forms of criminality. Day in and day out we continue to seize large quantities of these drugs. South Africa is not a playground for criminals,” said Gen. Masemola said.
