Eight killed when vehicles collide

Eight people were killed and three more seriously injured after two cars collided on the N2 in the Eastern Cape.

The accident took place on Sunday at 16:45 when a Ford Kuga crashed head-on into a Toyota Fortuner. The accident happened in Dutywa in the direction of Mthatha.

According to a spokesperson for the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, there were six occupants of the Toyota Fortuner, of whom only one was a woman. Five people, four men and one woman, were driving in the Kuga. All five occupants of the Kuga died in the accident, while two men and the woman in the Fortuner were fatally injured. Both drivers of the vehicles died in the accident.

According to the spokesperson, the three injured occupants of the Fortuner were taken to the Butterworth provincial hospital for medical treatment.

“The circumstances surrounding the accident are still unknown. Various law enforcement authorities, including the police and the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), will investigate,” says the spokesperson. The police are also investigating a case of homicide.
