Emmy Awards to be seen on M-Net this year


This year, South Africans can follow the Emmy Awards live on M-Net (DStv channel 101) and see who all are awarded the “Oscars of television”.

The 75th Emmy Awards event, which was scheduled to take place on September 18, 2023, was postponed until January 15 due to Hollywood’s crippling writers’ and actors’ strikes last year.

The Emmys usually take place on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a US federal holiday, and were last postponed in 2001 due to the 9/11 attacks.

Due to the months-long delay, actors such as Elizabeth Debicki, currently seen as Princess Diana in the sixth and final installment of The Crownnominated for roles they had already played almost two years ago.

However, the event will finally go ahead on Monday, and will be hosted by actor and comedian Anthony Anderson.

It is expected that especially programs such as Succession, The Last of Us and The White Lotus – all among the most nominated series – will each take home figurines.

These programs are all currently also available on the South African streaming service, Showmax.

Succession-actors Kieran Culkin, Jeremy Strong and Brian Cox are three of the six nominees for best actor in a drama, while Sarah Snook, who plays the role of Shiv Roy in this series, is nominated for best actress in a drama.

Jenna Ortega was also nominated for her role in the Netflix hit, Wednesdayand will be the youngest winner of the award for best actress in a comedy if her name is called on Monday night.

It is also expected that this year’s Emmys may pay tribute to Matthew Perry. He himself received an Emmy nomination in 2002 for his role as the prankster Chandler Bing Friends.

RNews previously reported that Perry died in October 2023 at the age of 54 due to an overdose of ketamine, but his death was later labeled as an accident.

His Friends-co-stars paid tribute to their late friend on social media shortly after the actor’s death.

“Saying goodbye to our Matty was a wave of emotions that I have never experienced before. We all experience loss somewhere in our lives, loss of life or loss of love,” said Jennifer Aniston, who plays the role of Rachel Green in Friends performed, wrote on Instagram.
