The South African-born Brydon Carse was approached by the England team in the World Cup cricket tournament on Monday to replace the injured Reece Topley.
Carse has so far played 12 ODIs and three T20Is for England since making his debut in 2021.
Topley broke his left index finger in Saturday’s defeat against South Africa and will miss the rest of the World Cup in India. He was England’s best bowler in the tournament.
Topley underwent scans after Saturday’s game which indicated the full severity of his injuries, the England and Wales Cricket Board said in a statement. He was due to return to England within 24 hours where he will work with England and Surrey’s medical teams on his recovery.
England, the defending champions, have won just one of their four matches in the World Cup tournament and have an uphill battle to reach the semi-finals.
The English team will face Sri Lanka on Thursday.
