Etzebeth’s injury may keep him sidelined for days

Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth is expected to be unable to train for up to 10 days due to a shoulder injury.

Etzebeth left the field in the 26th minute of the Springboks’ 18-3 victory over Scotland in Marseille on Sunday.

“We are waiting for the scan,” Rassie Erasmus, South Africa’s director of rugby, said on Monday. “It would be a blow not to let him train for seven to 10 days.”

South Africa continues the defense of its World Cup title on Sunday when it faces Romania in Bordeaux. Erasmus said Etzebeth “wouldn’t have been selected for that match anyway”. “But we would have expected him to have trained fully.”

Etzebeth started alongside Franco Mostert at lock against the Scots and was replaced by RG Snyman.
