Marcell Coetzee, former Springbok rugby player who is currently still running as a Bloubul player, is also nowadays a patron of the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria.
Earlier this year, Coetzee took his place as patron of the Voortrekker Monument alongside the famous mixed martial artist Dricus du Plessis.
Coetzee and Du Plessis are both world-renowned sportsmen and use their platforms to bring the story of the Afrikaner and the Voortrekker Monument to the world.
Coetzee recently visited the monument again to support the Project 20,000 campaign and took the opportunity to wish the Springboks good luck in their upcoming matches in this year’s Rugby World Cup.
“I am standing here again today at our cultural center because it is a place that is very close to my heart,” Coetzee said during his visit.
“As patron of the monument, I would like to take this opportunity to wish our men in green and gold good luck with the World Cup. We all stand firmly behind you,” he says.
Coetzee also signed a Bloubul jersey which will later be signed by the rest of the Bloubul team and handed over to the winner of the monument’s Superbru competition during the World Cup.
“I visit the monument often. I’m here almost more often than I am at home, so when I was approached to act as patron of the monument, I easily said yes. Earlier this year my co-patron along with the monument decided to kick off Project 20,000 and recruit 20,000 new friends to join the monument, and today I put my hand up and say I’m one of 20,000. “
In 2021, Project 10,000 was announced and the monument today boasts more than 11,000 friends who have already joined. That’s why the monument decided to make the project bigger and recruit 20,000 new friends by December 16 this year.
“It is the duty of all of us to protect the monument and carry it into the future. I know Dricus is one of the strongest guys in the world, and I try to be strong like him myself, but we can’t protect the monument alone.
“I would like to encourage everyone to take up the torch with me and help the Voortrekker Monument recruit 20,000 new friends.”
