Thobela, known as the “Rose of Soweto”, was 57 years old. A family member told AFP that Thobela had been suffering from poor health for some time.

“When cell phone calls to him went unanswered, we went to his apartment, gained access and discovered he was dead.”

The illness he suffered from and the cause of his death are not yet known.

Thobela has boxed professionally for 16 years since 1990, winning three world titles in two weight divisions.

SuperSport reports that Thobela won 40 of his 56 boxing bouts, 26 of which were by knockout.
