A 23-year-old scrap yard owner, as well as three other suspects, respectively 24, 38 and 43 years old, were arrested on Saturday around 10:00 on charges of theft.

Residents of Kutloanong near Odendaalsrus in the Free State gave information to the Kutloanong police about a suspect who was apparently on his way to sell copper cables at a supermarket.

Capt. Stephen Thakeng, police spokesperson, says members of the community then detained the suspect until the police were on the scene after which another copper cable was later found at the same supermarket.

The Odendaalsrus police seized a total of 46 rolls of 18-core copper cable.

The four suspects will appear in the Odendaalsrus Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Brig. Mzondi Mojafi, the acting district commissioner of Lejweleputswa, praised residents of Kutloanong “for becoming a reporting nation, which led to the arrest of four suspects. She also praised the police who responded quickly to the information.
