A fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday at a sponge mattress factory in Sunderland Ridge in Pretoria.

“The fire department was called at around 01:30 and resources from four fire stations were deployed,” says Thabo Charles Mabaso, spokesperson for the city’s fire and rescue service.

Several calls were received that the building was engulfed in flames.

Drums with an unknown amount of the chemical MDI were saved from the fire.

“A firefighter was treated for minor to moderate injuries when he slipped and fell,” says Mabaso. “Three persons, a man, a woman and a two-year-old child, were treated for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital in a stable condition.”

Three structures, three cargo containers and a truck were destroyed in the fire.

“The cost of the losses has not yet been determined. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.”
