Fisherman disappears into stormy sea

A fisherman is missing after he was knocked off the rocks by waves near Herolds Bay. Several rescue teams from the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), the police and Western Cape emergency services were still looking for the man by late Saturday afternoon.

According to a spokesperson for the NSRI, their Wilderness Team was activated at approximately 14:50 when they received information about an adult man who had been knocked off the rocks near the Gwaing estuary by waves.

Personnel from the Western Cape emergency services, swimmers from the NSRI, as well as George’s fire and rescue services joined the police at the scene. A vessel from NSRI Mossel Bay, which was training in the area, was also used to help with the search.

“When the members arrived at the scene, the sea was very rough and the coastline difficult to pass. Nevertheless, a search has been launched.”

However, there was no sign of the man from Pacaltsdorp in George and the police’s diving unit was called in to help further with the search.

“Three boats from the NSRI’s Wilderness branch joined the police diving unit on Sunday morning to help search. The search continues.

“Our thoughts are with the missing man’s friends and family at this difficult time.”
