Five died when truck overturned on R33

Five people died in an accident on Monday evening after a lorry transporting timber overturned on the R33 between Carolina and Warburton.

According to Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the department of community safety in Mpumalanga, four men – all passengers of the truck – died at the scene.

“The driver and two other passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Carolina Hospital for further medical care.”

A fifth person later died in hospital.

“It is suspected that the driver lost control of the truck, after which it overturned. An investigation into the accident is already underway.”

Vusi Shongwe, MEC for community safety and liaison in the province, expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
