The excitement over the showdown between the Springboks and English Roses in the World Cup semi-final almost ended in tragedy for supporters at a spectator park in Rustenburg.

Five people were injured when they fell off a podium at the spectator park in question shortly before the end of the showdown. The spectator park is at a restaurant adjacent to Rustenburg High School.

Sheila Mabale-Huma, mayor of Rustenburg, says the incident took place at 22:30 during the broadcast of the semi-final.

Emergency services were called to assist the five people and “worked tirelessly to ensure that the injured supporters received the best possible medical treatment”.

It is not clear how it happened that the supporters fell, but Mabale-Huma says the incident has already been reported to the municipality’s disaster management unit.

She also undertook to assemble a team of security experts to investigate the incident.

“The investigation will help the municipality to prevent a repetition of the incident,” she says.

“The Rustenburg local municipality is a safety-conscious institution and will always put the safety of our community first.”

Mabale-Huma also wished the injured supporters a speedy recovery.
