The police are looking for a group of attackers who shot dead five people at a house in Gelvandale, Gqeberha, in the Eastern Cape on Sunday evening.
Col. Priscilla Naidu, police spokesperson, says the group of armed men with balaclavas entered a yard in Koedoestraat around 23:50.
“Shots were fired from outside before the gunmen stormed into the building. Five people – three men and two women – died in the incident.”
According to Naidu, the victims are between the ages of 24 and 42. Their next of kin have yet to be traced.
“It is further alleged that drugs were traded in the house.”
According to Naidu, the motive for the murders is unclear at this stage and the police will follow up on every lead to identify and arrest the attackers.
“Five charges of murder are being investigated.”
Lt. Gen. Nomthetheleli Mene, provincial police chief, on Monday instructed the police’s organized crime investigation unit to arrest the attackers as soon as possible.
“The loss of innocent lives is always a serious concern. The safety and well-being of our communities remains our highest priority, and we will do everything in our power to ensure that justice is done.
“We appeal to anyone with information about this case to come forward and assist us in our pursuit of justice.”
