Freezing weather clipping airplane wings at OR Tambo

Several local flights due to depart from OR Tambo Airport in Kempton Park on Tuesday morning were delayed due to the freezing cold that has hit Gauteng in the past few days.

FlySafair says several of its flights have been delayed this morning due to ice on the planes’ wings. This early morning delay has meanwhile forced the airline to also adjust the departure times of its other flights.

The airline apologized to passengers for the delays.

Samkeliselo Thwala, a meteorologist attached to the South African Weather Service (SAWD), says a minimum temperature of 0.8 °C was reported in Johannesburg this morning – slightly warmer compared to Monday’s minimum temperature of -3.3 °C in the City of Gold .

Thwala says Monday was undoubtedly Gauteng’s coldest day of the winter.

However, the mercury has already started to rise in some places after yesterday’s snowfall. It is currently 13 °C in Johannesburg; almost 5 °C warmer than Monday’s maximum temperature of 8.5 °C.
