Gautenger died when boat capsized at Seepunt

A 32-year-old man from Johannesburg died on Saturday when a boat with four people overturned in the sea near Queens Beach in Seepunt, Cape Town.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said in a statement that the engine of the dinghy in which the men were riding is thought to have broken down. Eyewitnesses called the NSRI.

Cape Town’s water rescue network has also been activated.

“NSRI Bakoven and NSRI Table Bay responded. The Western Cape emergency services, traffic authority, police and Life Healthcare also responded to the call.”

A bystander provided assistance by using one of the NSRI’s pink lifebuoys.

“All four men were already on the beach where their boat also washed up when rescue teams arrived at the scene.”

NSRI paramedics applied CPR to one man, presumably a 32-year-old man from Johannesburg. Other paramedics joined them. All efforts to revive the man were unfortunately in vain. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The police are conducting an inquest.

“We express our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased,” NSRI added.

A man from Britain and two South Africans who were also on the boat were unhurt.
