George: Remains found in construction debris

Security personnel came across a hand among the construction debris of the collapsed apartment block in George.

Sgt. Chris Spies, police spokesperson, says the police were called to the premises where the debris from the collapsed building is kept at 11:00 on Friday. This site is not where the apartment building collapsed on May 6 in Victoria Street.

The human remains have since been recovered and sent to the police laboratory for forensic analysis to determine their origin. According to Spies, it must be determined whether it can be connected to a victim who died during the incident.

However, Spies made it clear that no further body parts were found in the construction debris.

The latest find is indeed part of the police’s investigation into the collapse.

The rescue and recovery operation in Victoria Street was completed last week after an apartment building under construction collapsed on 6 May. The operation lasted a total of 260 hours, with staff working 24 hours a day – in two shifts.

A total of 34 people died in the disaster.

Nine survivors were still being treated in hospital last week.
