Godongwana announces increase in R350 allowance

The emergency allowance introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic, also known as the R350 allowance, will increase to R370 per month from 1 April.

This represents an increase of around 5.7%.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana made the announcement in the National Assembly on Thursday.

Godongwana says this is “part of the progressive realization of basic human rights”.

He also announced that social grants will be increased over the course of 2024. This includes a R100 increase in the allowance for the elderly, war veterans, those with disabilities and those dependent on care. The increase will take place gradually with an increase of R90 in April and R10 in October.

He also announced an increase of R50 in the allowance for foster parents and R20 for child support.

“We are sensitive to the increase in the cost of living of the nearly 19 million South Africans who rely on these grants. We have done everything we can within what the fiscal envelope allows us.”
