Golf: Boutier wins after marathon playoff

The Maybank Women’s Golf Championship ended on Sunday in Kuala Lumpur with a marathon play-off between Celine Boutier (France) and Atthaya Thitikul (Thailand) after poor weather conditions first messed things up.

Boutier and Thitikul finished first together on 267 shots (-21), after which nine playoff holes followed and Boutier finally walked away with the laurels.

The tournament has prize money of around R54 million, with almost R8.48 million going to the winner.

Rose Chang (America) and Thidapa Suwannapura (Thailand) were joint third at 269 (-19) with Peiyun Chien of China fifth (270, -1).

Nelly Korda (America), Gemma Dryburgh (Scotland) and Brooke Henderson (Canada) were joint sixth at 271 (-17).

South Africa’s Ashleigh Buhai was 47th at 284 (-4).

* In Doha in Qatar, Spaniard Jorge Campillo took the lead after the third round of the Qatar Masters after the overnight leader, Daniel Hillier (New Zealand), spoiled his lead by 74 strokes.

Campillo finished the third round in 66 and finished one stroke ahead of Finland’s Sami Valimaki (201, -15) in the clubhouse at 200 (-16).

The Scot Robert MacIntyre (202, -14) is third with South Africa’s Thomas Aiken, another Scot Ewen Ferguson, the American Sean Crocker and the Spaniard Ignacio Elvira together fourth on 203 (-13).

Of the other South Africans, Thriston Lawrence and Zander Lombard both finished on 207 (-9), with Daniel van Tonder and Hennie du Plessis both on 211 (-6) and Deon Germishuys on 213 (-4).
