Golf: Pavon makes French history


On the Torrey Pines golf course in San Diego, California, Matthieu Pavon sent the French flag flying high when he became the first French golfer to win a tournament in the American PGA series.

Pavon, who scored a birdie from almost three meters on the 18th hole in the final round of the Farmers Insurance tournament, threw his arms in the air and shouted as he hugged his jogger.

Pavon finished the final round in 69 strokes and finished at 275 strokes (-13). He scored just one birdie in the final round to earn almost R30 million with his victory.

He beat the Dane Nicolai Højgaard (276, -12) by one stroke to avoid a playoff.

The German Stephan Jaeger, who led after the second and third rounds, scored 72 shots in the fourth round and finished with the Americans Jake Knapp and Nate Lashey on 277 shots (-11).

* In the US LPGA Series Women’s Drive On tournament played at the Bradenton course in Florida, Nelly Korda extended her third-round lead to four shots over New Zealander Lydia Ko, who beat last week’s Won Tournament of Champions.

Korda shot 68 in the third round and is four shots ahead of Ko, Ayaka Furue of Japan and Megan Khan of America at 200 (-13), who all three finished at 204 (-9) in the clubhouse.

Sei-Young Kim of South Korea, Xiyu Lin of China, Auston Kim of America and Robyn Chou of Australia are joint fifth at 205 (-8).

* In the Ras Al Khamaih Championship played at the Al Hamra Country Club, South Africa’s Brandon Stone is fourth after the third round, but seven strokes behind the leader, Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen.

Olesen finished the third round in 63 strokes and finished at 194 (-22).

He is four strokes ahead of his compatriot Rasmus Hojgard (198, -18), with Frederic Lacroix of France third on 200 (-16).

Stone, who finished the third round in 67 strokes, is tied for fourth at 201 (-15) with Angel Hidalgo of Spain and Marcus Helligkilde (Denmark).

Zander Lombard is seventh on 202 (-14), with his compatriots Louis de Jager (207), Jayden Schaper, Jaco Prinsloo and Hennie du Plessis (all on 208) and Dylan Frittelli (216) further back.

* In the local Sonskyn series’ Mediclinic invitational tournament, which is played on the Maccauvlei course in Vereeniging, Ryan van Velzen shot forward in the third round.

Van Velzen completed the round, which was interrupted by rain, in 64 strokes and is one stroke ahead of Neil Schietekat (200, -16) on 199 strokes (-17).

Schietekat, who was leading after the second round, is one stroke ahead of Oliver Bekker (201, -15), followed by Yuvrav Premlall (202, -14).

Dylan Naidoo is fifth on 203 (-13) with a host of players, including DK Kim of South Korea, on 204.

Five South Africans, Estiaan Conradie, Jbé Kruger, Martin Rohwer, Jean Hugo and Peter Karmis are with Kim on 204 (-12).
