Good news: Derick opens his eyes

Former Springbok flyhalf Derick Hougaard opened his eyes on Thursday.

This is what the singer and Hougaard’s friend, Nádine, said on Facebook.

“His infection count has decreased and he is currently receiving new antibiotics. The carbon dioxide in his blood has decreased considerably and his oxygen intake is getting better every day!”

Nádine says Hougaard responds to questions and his brain function currently looks good. “There are other complications for which he is still receiving treatment and the sedation has been reduced. He cannot speak with the tubes in his throat, he is in pain and he is terribly tired, but we are indescribably grateful and excited that he has opened his eyes!”

Nádine says there are still prayers for his lungs to fully heal.

She also thanked everyone who prays together and supports them in faith and love.

“All glory to our Heavenly Father! Derick’s family is also grateful for everyone’s care, love and prayers.”

RNews reported earlier that Loftus’s Liefling, as Hougaard is known, was admitted to the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria with a lung infection. He was found unconscious in his home last week. Nádine explained earlier that Hougaard’s left lung collapsed and on Monday also the lower part of his right lung.
