Gr. 7-learner raped, strangled

The Gauteng Department of Education has expressed its shock at the death of a gr. 7-learner from Soshanguve who was found dead over the weekend after she was apparently raped and strangled.

Matome Chiloane, Gauteng MEC of Education, strongly condemned the news about the learner’s death as an incident of gender-based violence. The girl was a learner at Echibini Junior Secondary School.

According to Chiloane, the girl died on Sunday after an attacker allegedly climbed through a window of her parents’ house. She was raped and then strangled, Chiloane said.

“It is claimed that her parents were sleeping in the other room, and only realized what had happened in the morning when they tried to wake her up.”

The police are investigating the incident, says the MEC.

“We are devastated by what happened. We would like to express our deepest condolences to the learner’s family and her school. We are hopeful that the law enforcers will work quickly to bring the perpetrator to justice.”

The Gauteng police could not immediately be reached for comment.
