Grade 8 learner dies outside Ennerdale school

A Grade 8 learner from Oakdale Secondary School in Ennerdale, Johannesburg, died when he was attacked with a knife outside the school.

Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education, says a grade 10 learner, who was also involved in the incident, is currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital.

“The incident apparently took place when the learners started fighting with each other. There are also allegations that the fight and the knife attack were influenced by gang activity among learners from different schools in the area.”

The police are investigating.

Matome Chiloane, provincial MEC for education and youth development, expressed his deepest condolences to the family and school community affected by the incident.

The department deployed counselors to the school for those who saw the traumatic incident happen.
