Greater vigilance after cholera outbreak in neighboring countries

The Department of Health says it is aware of a cholera outbreak in several of South Africa’s neighboring countries.

The department has already, in collaboration with stakeholders such as the Border Management Authority, intensified measures to carry out health screening tests at border posts, inform people about the disease and take steps to combat the cross-border spread of the disease.

“We appeal to all travelers returning from areas where cholera is endemic, such as Zimbabwe, to be aware of symptoms of cholera, to cooperate with health officials and to be honest,” says Foster Mohale, spokesperson for the Department of health.

Anyone suspected of having cholera among members will be referred to the nearest health facility for a test.
