It was officially confirmed on Thursday afternoon that 2024 will be Lewis Hamilton’s last year in the colors of Mercedes before he dons the red of Ferrari in 2025.

According to Mercedes, the seven-time world champion, now 39 years old, has activated a release option in his contract to make the move to Ferrari a reality already next year.

“It is the right time to take the step and I am excited about the new challenge,” said Hamilton.

“I have enjoyed an incredible 11 years with Mercedes and I am very proud of everything we have achieved together. It was definitely one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make.”

Toto Wolff, Mercedes team boss, said that Hamilton will always remain an important part of the team’s history.

After all, he won six of his seven world titles with Mercedes.

“Yet we always knew that our partnership would come to an end at some point. We accept his decision to pursue a new challenge.”

Hamilton has promised that he will give everything to stand on the podium with the Silver Arrows for the last time.

“I want to end my time with them on a high and I am 100% committed to giving my very best for the team this year.”

Meanwhile, Ferrari has also confirmed the news that the Briton will be Charles Leclerc’s teammate next year.

“Ferrari is pleased to announce that Lewis Hamilton will become part of the team in 2025. He has signed a multi-year contract,” the Italian racing team said in a statement.

Sainz’s future still uncertain

Carlos Sainz, the man who has to make way for Hamilton, said on social media that he will part ways with Ferrari.

“However, there is still a long season ahead and as always I will give my best for the team and its supporters. News about my future will be announced soon.”

The Spaniard was one of the few racers who could win for Max Verstappen last year and the checkered flag was waved for him in Singapore.
