Head boy with 9 A’s just wants to ‘be happy’

Tertius Dekker, former headmaster of Midstream College in Centurion, greets his school with nine distinctions.

His dream for the future? “To be happy.” He would like to live by the sea and surf one day. For the time being, he will study actuarial science at Stellenbosch University (SU).

But he is having a hard time saying goodbye to his beloved school.

“I am from gr. 1 down already in Midstream College and it has always been fun. Not only did I do well academically, but I made so many friends who are almost like family.”

He was involved in sports and culture and played hockey throughout school. “Time management was a big challenge for me, it was difficult to balance the role of head boy and the importance of the academy, not to mention sport and family.”

Fortunately, Tertius was taught from a young age that motivation comes from within yourself and that working hard allows you to achieve success. “I like to perform, because I know that I gave my best.” He also enjoys solving problems – hence maths is his favorite subject. “It’s always challenging.”

He and his father are also currently training for the Comrades and would like to participate in this ultramarathon this year.

His advice for prospective matrics is to take things one at a time. “Do each thing in its own time and do it properly.”
