Hiker drowned when he apparently slipped off a rock

The body of a man, believed to be in his 20s, was retrieved from a stream at Nkwe Permaculture in the east of Pretoria on Thursday after he is believed to have slipped off a rock and drowned.

According to Charles Mabaso, spokesperson for the Tshwane emergency services, the victim went for a walk with a friend on Thursday when he ended up in the water around 12:30.

Divers and rescue workers from the emergency services were called to the scene. They found the man’s body underwater and brought it to the surface, Mabaso said.

“Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. The police are on the scene for further investigation.”

The emergency services also appealed to residents to always be vigilant about their own safety and that of others when visiting recreational facilities.
