The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s fire services were called to a fire near the Du Kloof Lodge in the Du Toitskloof Pass on the N1.

Jo-Anne Otto, spokesperson for the municipality, confirmed that the Huguenot tunnel was closed in both directions due to the fire.

“The only available routes are currently via Franschhoek or Wellington via Bainskloof,” she said. “The fire services have requested that motorists do not stop to take pictures. It is a danger to fire vehicles and also obstructs traffic.”

According to Otto, three KWDM firefighting vehicles, two contracted ground crews from NCC and three helicopters, including two contracted air resources from Leading Edge Aviation and one from the provincial disaster management centre, were deployed.

Two more firefighting vehicles are on their way to the scene.
