Humphries puts on darts teenage sensation ears

16-year-old darts sensation Luke “The Nuke” Littler’s dreams of being crowned world darts champion were dashed on Wednesday when Luke Humphries beat him 7-4 in the final.

RNews earlier reported that Littler, the youth world champion, stunned England over the festive period with his fairy-tale performance during his debut at London’s Alexandra Palace. At Wednesday’s final, hundreds of spectators in costumes – from Super Mario characters to Oompa Loompas – lined up to cheer on the pair.

Littler got off to a shaky start but found his rhythm and was 5-2 up as he sought to become the sport’s youngest world champion. However, he missed a difficult double two against Humphries, which paved the way for the 28-year-old’s first world title.

“It was unbelievable,” Littler told AFP after pocketing the runner-up’s check for £200,000 (about R4.7 million).

“Every game was good, but the last game pissed me off. Congratulations to Humphries – he deserves the win.”

Humphries says he learned a lot from the game against Littler and that the win is an unforgettable moment for him.

“He has incredible talent. I had to win this one because I’m sure he will win many more.

“You will never see a 16-year-old like him again… He is one of the best players in the world, there is no doubt about that,” said Humphries.
