Illegal miners flee when police raid at Sabie

A multidisciplinary team from the police in Mpumalanga raided illegal mining operations in Sabie during the Vala Umgodi operation on Thursday and seized a lot of equipment used in these illegal operations.

Col. Donald Mdhluli, police spokesperson, says the police seized 15 pendukas (cylindrical devices used to sift gold), eight gas bottles, five gas regulators and a blowtorch.

Many illegal miners fled across the wooded riverbank during the raid.

Lt. Gen. Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, provincial police chief, praised the action against the illegal mining operations.

“We will continue with these disruptive raids until we put an end to illegal mining operations,” Manamela said.

RNews earlier reported that nine suspects were arrested in March on a farm near Mbombela (Nelspruit). During that raid, law enforcement officers seized, among other things, 30 generators and a lot of other mining equipment. The raid also formed part of Operation Vala Umgodi which focuses on combating the spate of illegal mining operations.
