Innibos sets a convivial table for highlights of entertainment, culture

The Innibos Lowveld National Arts Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and to celebrate, a convivial table is set for a highlight of music, theatre, food, current affairs, books and a huge offer for the small team.

The festival’s theme is “Winning Recipe” and takes place as usual in the heart of winter in Mbombela (Nelspruit).

The versatile festival program was launched on Thursday during an intimate event at Jacaranda FM’s studio by Sandra Jacobs and Andy Lubbe, founders of the Innibos Festival, as well as Dr. Mathews Phosa, chairman of the festival.

“As you can deduce, food plays a big role in this year’s theme,” Sandra said during the launch.

“Whether your preference is music, theatre, books or art, there really is something for every taste on the Innibos program this year.”

Festival program

The star-studded main stages promise to attract thousands of festival-goers again. The festival kicks off with the Huisgenoot Kick-Off Concert on Thursday 27 June. Hamilton Wessels is the master of ceremonies, and Van Pletzen, Bok van Blerk, Dream Syndrome, Dr. Victor & The Rasta Rebels, Early B, Barto and Spoegwolf will provide the entertainment.

Friday evening and Saturday evening there are also big concerts with Ricus Nel, Riaan Benadé, Demi Lee Moore, Francois van Coke, Elandré, Brendan Peyper, Die Piesangskille and Karlien van Jaarsveld.

For the more alternative palette, there is also an Innibos Alternative concert on Saturday evening with Zaan Sonnekus, Die Heuwels Fantasties, Matthew Gold and Coenie Naudé.

The festival closes on Sunday evening with the Loof Hom Innibos dedicated concert. Bernice West will lead this concert.

The three visiting stages are also full to overflowing with artists such as Janie Bay, Damian Beer, Jan-Mattys and John Rock Prophet, Lisie Basson, Jemma Catherine and Alter Ego.

The Boma walking theater will expose festival-goers to theater and other art forms, with productions such as Wynand van Vollenstee’s The funeral oration, André the Hilarious Hypnotist’s hilarious hypnosis of audience members and Thick Messed Up by Mel the Storyteller.

Woelwaters is the ideal place where the small team can play and enjoy their holes. A jam-packed entertainment program with lots of fun activities is offered every day from 11:00 to 17:00 – and it’s completely free.

Among other things, Spar offers Kolwyntjiepret for the young team, while Tiaan Slabbert in Cook and the silly rat can be seen. Marlene du Toit and Wendy Byneveldt also read books to the children at the ATKV Storytime.

Radio Laeveld’s Sanett Oosthuizen will also hold book discussions every day with authors such as Leon van Nierop, Riaan Grobler and Amore Bekker.

The Psychedelic Theater company will add color to the festival grounds with vivid performances, and you can look forward to a carnival of colorful stilt walkers and gigantic puppets.

The production program overflows with theater and music productions and dance companies and performances, with Albatros by Louw Venter as the festival’s flagship production.

The popular ATKV-Boeke-Crawl is back again, with Etienne van Heerden, Koos Kombuis, Jana Cilliers and Johny Klein riding together from the NG Church Westergloed to Kaapsehoop.

Festival-goers get a capped cup with a crunch of muscadel and a scarf to ward off the worst cold of the mystical village, Kaapsehoop. There are three places to visit where books, words and tunes will be visited.

Festival poet

This year’s festival poet is Johan Myburg. He wrote a poem about the theme, “Feesmaal”, especially for Innibos. This poem will be depicted in music, dance and visual art during the honoring event which will take place on June 26 at 18:00 at the ATKV Arts and Books Oasis.

For the adventurous souls, there is a fun day planned at the Sudwala caves with the brother duo Dream Syndrome.

Come glide 150 meters above the Houtbosloop valley in the Mankele mountains and see the Lowveld’s natural beauty from the air. Kirsten and Kyle are going to experience this adventure.

There is room for only 30 young people. After the adventure, everyone gathers at the Sudwala Caves’ restaurant where everyone gets delicious hot chocolate.

Tickets for this year’s festival grounds and productions are available from 8 April at Ticketpro. For the full festival program visit the Innibos website.
